In each of his novels, Davis MacDonald highlights a social issue that has a significant impact on our world. In Silicon Beach, The Judge must deal with one of our greatest challenges: homelessness.

For many cities, solving homelessness is a mounting challenge. Throughout the U.S., cities face some level of homeless activity. California, Texas, New York and Florida greatly outnumber cases in other states.

5 Key Causes of Homelessness

Many people live their days not having a place to call home. Reasons vary by individual or family but generally involve one or more of these situations:

Housing

Shelter and food are essentials, at the bare minimum. Yet there is a shortage of affordable housing available. As the cost of living rises, and housing availability declines, the gap will continue to widen and result in increased homelessness.

Income

Those on a low or fixed income often struggle to make ends meet. Ultimately, necessities like food, clothing, transportation, and housing become out of reach.

Mental Health

Physical and mental health are inextricably linked to homelessness. Often a person is saddled with poor health to start and conditions are exacerbated by the jarring experience.

Violence

Victims of domestic abuse become homeless when leaving their toxic relationship and have no safe place to turn.

Racial and Social Inequality

Statistically, minorities experience homelessness at higher rates than Caucasians. While at-risk members of the LGBTQ community facing social stigma may choose to leave home unexpectedly.

Astounding Homelessness Statistics

  • Over 500,000 people experience homelessness on any given night
  • More than 185,000 people on the streets are families with children
  • Greater than 87,000 single individuals have a disabling condition
  • In excess of 40,000 veterans are experiencing homelessness

Solving Homelessness – a Nation Divided

Living on the streets can strip an individual of his dignity, yet camps are split on how best to serve fellow mankind. Supporters believe building shelters and offering employment is the most logical, civil approach. Opponents are fraught with underlying hostility, suggesting homelessness contributes to crime and housing lowers property values. Where is the point of neutrality?

Rising Above

Housing is key. Assistance is available to those experiencing homelessness. Most cities have a shelter where there is no cost to eat, sleep and shower. Group homes, transitional living centers and family service programs are also offered. Shrinking the situation is possible if cities increase housing options without preconditions of employment, income, sobriety or clean criminal records.
